Project Management Office – PMO

Did you know that not every organization has a PMO? Generally, as the number of projects grows in a company, the implementation of a PMO can be very useful to manage and reduce the risk as resources tend to be limited, driving the business to control competing priorities.

Some of the most important PMO functions include but are not limited to:

  • Implementation of project templates, policies, and procedures.

  • Standardization and implementation of PM methodology.

  • Support the business by coaching and mentoring activities.

  • Ensure the projects are aligned with the strategic objectives of the organization.

  • Coordination of multiple projects to improve resource planning and forecasting.

  • Implementation of scorecards and dashboards for monitoring and controlling. This will help to increase the visibility of stakeholders into project progress.

Based on the degree of control it has on projects, the PMO can be:

  • Supportive: in this type of low authority level, the PMO is a project repository and has a consultative role to projects by providing templates, best practices, training, access to information, and lessons learned from other projects.

  • Controlling: this type of PMO has a medium authority level by requiring compliance with project management frameworks or methodologies, using specific tools, and templates.

  • Directive: in this case, the PMO has a high level of authority by directly managing the projects.

Keep in mind that the definition of PMO can vary depending on the organization. A PMO may be introduced in the organization to more efficiently managed an increased number of projects, enhancing the performance by coordinating them in an integrated way to improve the use of resources.

Are you familiar with the PMO? If you have any other important aspect to highlight, please share it in the comment section below.
