Having the opportunity to work with my professional mentor has been a wonderful and rewarding experience, not only because of the knowledge and information we have shared but also because it represents a process of feedback and continuous improvement.
I am about to share with you the 5 most remarkable and valuable advice that I have acquired from my professional mentor during these last 2 months.
1. Define the purpose of your Resume
Especially, if you already have professional experience and you want to apply for an internship, it is convenient to adapt your resume for this purpose, in this way you will place a greater emphasis on your recent studies and you can avoid being considered as "overqualified" for the position you apply for. Even if you want to change the direction of your professional career, you must customize your resume, highlighting those skills, experiences, and achievements that best fit the career change you are looking for.
2. Your motivation letter must make an impact
There are countless recommendations for writing a motivation letter, however, in general terms, the approach should include three basic aspects:
You: Who are they? What do they do? What are their challenges and needs?
Me: Show off your skills. What are your achievements? What sets you apart from the rest?
Us: Highlight the added value you can bring to the organization and what your motivation is.
3. Pay attention to the use of abbreviations and acronyms in your Resume.
Keep in mind the person who will read your Resume. If you apply for a technical position, the HR recruiter may not be familiar with all the acronyms. But, if you are applying to a specific industry the use of sector terms is important. As a rule, try to make a balance using the terms of the job description. Remember that most companies use specialized software (applicant tracking systems - ATS) to track keywords.
4. Even small details are key during an interview
It is not just about preparing yourself to answer the most common questions recruiters ask, but also about taking care of your body language and self-confidence so that the message you convey is compelling.
5. There is always room for improvement.
You must be at the forefront, updating your resume, motivation letter, skills, among other aspects. It is important that you read the job description carefully and that you adapt your general resume considering the keywords. Similarly, your motivation letter should be customized to the industry and organization to which you apply. When it comes to an interview, do not forget to practice your elevator pitch. This must also be adapted. The secret is to practice and show confidence.
Take action!. Are you considering these aspects?
I hope these tips are helpful. If you have any other valuable advice you can share it in the comments below.
